There is no difference between Paramore and Babyshambles. This is the conclusion I came to after watching each band's set at the "Rock Am Park" festival in Nurnberg Germany on Sunday. Pete Doherty plays the part of the poet clown while Haley Williams plays the teen pop star.
I had tried to see Babyshambles play the day before, at "Rock In Ring" in Nurberg Germany, but the band did not show. The rumored explanation was that they were stuck in traffic. I had already given up hope that I would see them this time because I expected them to just not show up again. When i got a text from Warren saying that the band had actually taken the stage, I rushed over.
Babyshambles' music seems to be a complete reflection of Pete Doherty's personality. He stumbles around the stage in a drunken manner to the rhythm of the songs with ease. He helps himself to the various beverages set on top of the amplifiers. He takes long pulls off of his cigarette and then exaggerates each exhale slowly. Everyone smokes, even the techs, lighting up one cigarette as the other goes out. When not playing his guitar, Pete sings with one hand in his pocket, rocking back and forth on his heels. His banter between songs sounds like he's mocking Keith Richards. When someone in the audience throws a bottle on stage he picks it up and throws it right back at them. A shoe follows shortly after and he does the same. I look around and everyone seems entranced, they raise their hands into the air and clap along without any prompting. But the music isn't being played for the people to dance to. The music is being played so Pete and his band can look cool while playing it. The whole thing is an act, a well rehearsed, well thought out performance.
I had no plans to watch Paramore play this weekend. We played some festivals with them in the states this past year and I'd watched a couple minutes of their sets then. It's not my thing. We played on the same stage this weekend and both days our dressing rooms were side by side. We ended up playing a couple games of Foosball together and talking a little on Saturday. They seem like nice people. I decided I would watch their set on Sunday. Paramore are a tight band, they have obviously been on tour for a while now. You can tell the songs are muscle reflex to them. Their young crowd responds to them, they know every word to every song. They are rabid for them. After the show we somehow ended up with a copy of their computer printed set list. The breaks for Haley to talk to the audience were planned into the set. Three songs - Haley Speaks - two songs - Haley speaks - two songs - Haley Speaks - two songs - Haley speaks - last song. The whole thing is an act, a well rehearsed, well thought out performance.
Babyshambles make a conscious decision when they choose not to mute their guitars as they tune on stage. They could easily do so with a Boss tuning pedal. Costing around $100, they are a standard and every band uses them live. Babyshambles want the crowd to hear them tuning in between songs. It's as conscious of a decision when Paramore decides they want the 3 ego boxes up front on the stage for them to dance and jump on for dramatic effect. Pete Doherty sitting down on the drum riser mid set and taking off all of his necklaces for no apparent reason is a spontaneous act, but it's a planned spontaneity. It's as plotted when Paramore's guitarist runs, jumps into the air and rolls off the back of the bass player. There is no difference, both bands are putting on a show, their shows just have different aesthetics. Each band's members just have different philosophies in their approach to the stage. Paramore's dyed, flat ironed hair is no different from Babyshambles' "I can't be bothered to comb or style my hair" look. Both bands care about what they are doing in the same way. Paramore have their printed out set list and each member (guaranteed) does the exact same move, at the exact same time, in the exact same spot on stage each night. Babyshambles just kind of wanders on stage and jam into songs, each musician starting to play whenever they feel like it. It takes effort for Paramore to be so tight. It takes the same amount of effort for Babyshambles to be so loose.
Both bands have a frustratingly great sense of melody. I like Babyshambles' music. I own both of their albums. I don't like Paramore's music but cannot deny that, the morning after the show, I woke up humming the melody to one of their songs. There is no difference between Paramore and Babyshambles. This realization has greatly troubled me over the past couple days. I want to find some contrast, but I cannot.

You know, I never thought of Babyshambles that way. All the articles and news headlines I read about Pete Dougherty made me flat out hate the guy. But now I have some stuff to think about. There is some talk that Brittany's downward spiral is also a planned PR stunt. It honestly DID give her attention and she is constantly in the papers. If some people want THAT kind of notoriety...well whatever floats their boats.
And I never really listened to Paramore before. I'll give them a shot. Thanks
Never heard either of these bands but checked out Paramore, sound like one of the New Found Glory bands with a female singer. Not my thing. Don't listen to babyshambles but I've seen that dude in the news. Not got the whole-spend a shit-ton of money to make it look like I don't care what I look like-thing. I guess thats how most punk has always been too though.
i hate choreographed stage shows, not that i see to many of them anyways, outside of what I see on TV. the only band i've seen that comes to mind is anti-flag, who seem to have the same banter stuck within occasionally different sets.
getting awful bands' songs stuck in your heads is also pretty terrible, damn their catchyness!
I havn't seen the babyshambles at rock am ring because of the same reason that you didn't. They actually played their show this night at 3am, which seemed to me like they are pulling themselves to be the headliner, which actually The Verve were. I've seen Paramore at Rock am Ring, and the only thing I really liked at their show was their guitar-sound. As you said, it was a choreographie, not a rock show.
Besides: I nearly have the same picture that you have here in your blog, and it was "Rock am Ring", we played there one day after you, and I really regret this because I wished I could have talked to you guys backstage. I talked a lot to Martin at the Merch-Stand, he's a really cool guy.
I came to the same conclusion about NIN and Brittney Spears, but I still have NIN tickets.
Today Im heading over to meet with the owner of Gonz productions about what we will be picking Matt Good up in for the Arizonas show tomorrow.
I told them I'd help set up and tear down but I fear that when Matt see's me he will tell people Im not allowed to help :-p
Anyhow, I added you to my msn list.
Im a scorpio also, and the drummer for PANIK. We are covering your Thrash Unreal song, and you (and your drummer) can see it here www.youtube.com/adamdanyluck or on my band site.
How do you introduce yourself to the singer for Against Me! ?
Im trying my best here.
Sorry, Im online alot.
Have a nice day overseas (if youre still there).
I knew i recognized Doherty when I looked up Babyshambles on google. I appreciate the effort that these bands put into these planned acts of spontaneity. Obviously there's a point to where it's just so obvious. I guess I haven't gotten to the point where i'm playing shows as often as they may play, but at least when i'm singing and swigging on stage, it usually isn't planned. Sorry if i'm not making any sense, but I have a question for you, when I saw you guys, you finished the set with 'We Laugh at Danger...' as the second song in your encore. It was amazing, a few instrument changes happened, which i thought was brilliant and amazing, and Warren did this epic stage dive. The question is, was that planned, and is that something you've done numerous times?
Sorry if none of that made any sense. I have a hard time wording what i'm trying to say.
I like how music can disturb you and cause you discomfort as you search for a reason as to why it's doing that to to you. It shows how music moves you and it's great to see that in a musician. Especially one I respect. You're a saint, Tom.
i don't think the warren stage dive is ever planned because out of all the times i've seen we laugh at danger, the instrument change/stage dive only happened once, and it seemed incredibly unplanned especially as andrew frantically tried to figure out what to do before running to the drums..just saying.
no joke, that paramore song is so catchy.
when are you guys gonna sample refused to show you know your history?
If you plan everything out on stage each band member can look cool at the same time.
Paramore gives me a headache.
Yeah, I get what you're saying Tom. But you also know that Against Me! isn't all that different, too... I mean, half your songs are about that.
Whether it's Paramore doing their well-rehearsed act, or Babyshambles doing their well-rehearsed "spontaneous" act, or Against Me! struggling to find some third way singing self-referential lyrics, the same corporations are profitting equally off all three of you.
We'll still love you when you come back to basements.
Oh come on, not one of those "if it is not underground then its crap and its corporate" guys. Seriously, get over yourself. Branch out more you big baby.
Saw your show at Rock am ring, it was one of my highligths at the festival, along with getting bruises at Rage! :) Love the fact that you did play Americans Abroud, while playing in the Coca cola tent. Hope to see you in Sweden soon.
Thanks for a great show, good luck with the rest of the tour.
By the way, do you wanna marry me?
"We'll still love you when you come back to basements."
You got some sand in your vagina?
so what your saying is both bands are.......zero fun and tons of lameness......I %100 agree...and for the person that stated against me is similar....I bet your a huge fan of both those bands....
"We'll still love you when you come back to basements."
You're a dumb fuck and that's insulting to say to a musician. If they wanted to play in basements, they would be. Get over it.
hahaha, sandy vagina
"I like how music can disturb you and cause you discomfort as you search for a reason as to why it's doing that to to you. It shows how music moves you and it's great to see that in a musician. Especially one I respect. You're a saint, Tom."
PUKE.
C'mon, of course everyone wants to see their favorite band in a damn basement why wouldn't you. I also want to be 21 till the day I die. The fact is they don't play in basements anymore. I'd love to have them to myself and maybe 20 other people because I'm selfish. They are an awesome band who write awesome songs and people want to hear them period. As someone who's never had the opportunity put in front of them to sign to a major and be famous of course I'll say they should have stayed with Fat Wreck or even No Idea maybe even Plan-it-x but I've never been there. Don't tell me every punk kid out there grew up dreaming that he would be in a band that only played in basements for beer money. At one time or another we all wanted to be rock stars, they're doing that and its awesome. I agree most corporate shit is exactly that shit. I've bought maybe 3 albums over the last 10 years that were on major labels and have been burned every time, they suck. Against Me! were not one of them. I've kinda known these guys for awhile and they've always been an awesome bunch of dudes, just a few more 14 year olds hanging out asking for autographs than before.
tom, no one seems to be able to tell the difference between playing a show and putting on a show anymore. it's sad.
springsteen doesnt play the same show twice.
neither does against me!
Hey Tom
This blog is a great idea. It's the first time I've seen you discuss your feelings. Anyway, I just watched a live video of you in St Louis where you said your dad lived in Success! My dad lived in Rolla and I had to go there every summer. I wonder if we ever ran into one another when we were 12 (I think I'm about a year younger than you). Maybe you were at the Backlash/Versatile DIY show I saw there ten years ago.
Anyway, based on the logic used in your post, one could argue that Against Me! and Modest Mouse are the same band, not that I care about Paramore or babyshambles, or know who they are even. All I'm saying is, don't let it depress you.
I watched them perform at the Euro music video awards or whatever it was which turned out to be a mistake. Besides watching Pete stumble around hoping that he would pass out on live tv, Avril Lavigne had managed to sweep almost all the awards she was nominated for and give a lack luster performance with goth-dressed hip hop dancers.
this was very interesting to read. and it really got me thinking about how many other bands have their actions on stage planed out to what they wwant their image to be
all of you guys are suckups.
lol
wooow.
i really don't know who "babyshambles" is
but i know paramore.
and paramore is the most amazing band to ever hit the stage.
they give you what you pay for.
and show.
no matter what they always play their hearts out.
to see so many people agree with one person just because they're in a band kinda makes me sick.
haha
I saw P.O.S. played last year, and he's got this song where he starts the verse with, "I am P.O.S., I be the new generation of slaves..." he continues on into the song, and he uses this song to open his set. But when i saw him, his DJ was having technical difficulties, and there was a drum set randomly on stage for whatever band was playing that night. So he was like, well shit what do I do? So hes like, Oh i've got this friend on tour with me who plays drums and he joins P.O.S. and lays down a beat and he begins his set doing that song. I thought, wow that was pretty cool. A friend of mine sees P.O.S. perform a seperate night, and he does that same routine with the 'technical difficulties'. Your post reminded me of that. It's kind of cool, I saw a picture of Sage Francis wearing the same P.O.S. hoodie I have, and that's the only time i've ever seen anyone other than me with it.
'i hope i'm not like them. i'm not so sure.'
good luck.
Hey Tom, so I get this (and others) after posting on your entry...

Uhhh... so, ... sorry?
Am I supposed to stop talking to you cuz some guy tells me to? Let me know. Oh, we played shows all weekend, and my band did thrash unreal, and I did it as well last night at an acoustic show. Not that I did it amazing, but here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aNb0FqPJic
let me know if Im supposed to listen to crazy people and not talk to you.
i love how you critique paramore...but againstme!is oh so shitty.what a douche.
p.s. is the exclamation point necessary?
i couldnt agree with you more mr gabel.
No matter what you write, people will always complain. It's part of human nature. And communicating with idiots is also, sadly, part of human nature.

id agree with you. .. if i liked to only see a band once and never have to see them again because they do the same show night after night.
my friend does lights for mcr. they literlly put on the same show every night. same banter, everything. how much fun can that be for a fan, or even the band?
Hmmmm. You, my good sir. Should write a book. Call it, "Ode to Music Lost"......Or....something like that.
i was at the festival. great set from you guys.. it would have been cool to see you on the main stage with Offspring. I know those guys have said good things about you guys and Rise Against when it comes to current punk bands. did you watch Offspring?
